About the artist
George Douglas, The Earl Haig OBE RSA (born London, 1918-2009) studied at Camberwell School of Art, under Victor Pasmore, but did not follow his mentor from realism to abstraction. He had begun to paint self-portraits as a prisoner of war at Colditz during the Second World War. He later focussed on landscape painting, largely inspired by the Scottish borders where he spent most of his life. He was a hereditary peer, succeeding his father, Field Marshal the 1st Earl Haig at the age of nine.
