About the artwork
Abstracted embroidered waterfall on a soft blue background, falling from a calm horizontal strip of bright blue sky. The artist dyed her own yarn to suit the colours and light of the West Coast. She used a combination of hand and machine embroidery to create her work. Hex was Artist in Residence at four island secondary schools in Argyll and Bute (Tiree, Islay, Tobermory and Rothesay) in 1989/90 as part of the City of Culture Scheme, and developed these works from direct observation of the natural environment.
About the artist
Jennifer Hex (born London, 1938- 2016) studied printmaking at Glasgow School of Art, and taught at Beith High School and Campbeltown Grammar. Without access to printmaking facilities at Campbeltown Grammar, she began to make textiles, manipulating, stitching and embroidering in a variety of techniques of her own invention. She was facinated by the natural world, in movement or flux, and her work was a way of understanding the world, and encouraging the viewer to see, notice and understand natural occurances that we might easily overlook. She exhibited with the new Scottish Embroidery Group in Edinbugh and her work is held is several public collections, including National Museums Scotland and Glasgow Museums.
