Language Learning Resources for Parents

A comprehensive overview of different resources (An Litir Bheag, Speaking our Language) to support Adult Learners at all stages, from complete beginner to proficient. The resources are referenced against the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Resources (textbook, audio files) aimed at Gaelic (Learners) in the secondary school. This resource is very useful for adult learners and parents looking to improve their language skills.

eSgoil National 5 Gaelic Learners Course (YouTube) 
A full National 5 Gaelic (Learners) course offered by eSgoil. This is a great resource for adults or parents looking to develop their language skills and covers a wide range of topics.

‘Go Gaelic!’ 
Resources, aimed at Gaelic (Learners) not GME, in the primary school. These topic based resources provide a gentle introduction to basic vocabulary and may be suitable for parents beginning their own language learning journey.

Online Dictionary - A comprehensive online dictionary, complete with audio to support the pronunciation of words.

Online Thesaurus

‘Ceitidh Voice’  Downloadable ‘Gaelic’ voice with Scottish accent for use with communication software (such as Orato and Dragon).

Gaelic Grammar in simple language. Suitable for upper primary and secondary pupils. The website is available in Gàidhlig only.

Storlann’s Gaelic Education Resource website - Available in English and Gàidhlig, this website hosts a wide range of resources developed by Storlann for all levels of GME. The materials, with summaries in English, can be found here:

e-Storas - A Western Isles Council resource which combines nationally available resources (such as Storlann resources) with other links and materials. It can be broken down by subject and by Curriculum for Excellence level (early – 4th level) by clicking on the function on the top, right hand side of the page.

Gaelic Terminology Database  - ‘An Seotal’ is an on-line terminology database, particularly aimed at Gaelic-medium subject teaching in the secondary school, but with provision for and accessible to all other users.

  • Comharran sònraichte – Gaelic accents plug in for Google Docs and Office 365.

BBC Alba - Gaelic broadcasting including TV shows for all ages.

Giglets - Online Gaelic reading resources. Log-in details are necessary and this resource can be accessed through discussion with your child’s school.

Information about the Gaelic resources and offerings from the Scottish Book Trust. This includes information on bookbug and writing competition and has video from the ‘Authors Live in Demand’ series.

Gaelic Books Council - Online shop for the Gaelic Book Council who sell a range of Gaelic literature and resources for all ages.

Early Years Resources/Primary Resources

Gaidhlig nan Og  - Resources to support parents and Early Years practitioners to use Gaelic in a fun yet relevant way across a range of different topics.

Maths Games (1st Level) - Some interactive maths games for 1st level learners.

Traditional Stories - Traditional stories accompanied by audio and video illustrations. The website is available in Gàidhlig and aimed at Early and 1st Level learners.

BBC Bitesize

BBC Bitesize is the educational website from the BBC. It has resources for primary and secondary pupils and, for the senior phase of secondary, helps to support pupils with exam preparation. Their Gàidhlig Medium resources cover from P2 – P7 in the primary and range across different part of the curriculum. The resources include videos and games.

Resources aimed at teachers who deliver Gàidhlig Medium Education. The website, available in Gàidhlig, is broken down into different skills. In general, the resources contain downloadable worksheets relevant to each skill for different age groups.

  • Èisteadh & Labhairt: Listening and Talking
  • Eòlas air Sgrìobhadh: Knowledge about writing
  • Gràmar: Grammar
  • Làmh-sgrìobhaidh: Handwriting
    • This contains downloadable handwriting work sheets for pupils to trace and copy the shapes, including the accented letter we have in Gaelic.
  • Leughadh: Reading
    • This contains links to Storyworld and other resources (the Storyworld books themselves are available on ‘seosibh.storlann.co.uk’)
    • There are also worksheets with activities related to reading. All materials are in Gaelic.
  • Litreachadh: Literacy
    • This is useful for the ‘common words’ downloads which break down common vocab by year groups.
  • Fonaigs: Phonics
    • Mainly for early and 1st level, downloadable sheets which group words based on phonics
  • Tòimhseachdain: Games

‘SeoSibh’ – This is a database of digitised Gaelic resources and is particularly useful for pupils in primary school who use the ‘Storyworlds’ books. It is broken down by stage and not CfE level. You can search for specific resources.

Gaelic4Parents - Bookbug Audio Files (P1, P2 -P3), printable resources (such as door signs). There is more support for younger years (early and 1st level). There are also recordings of many different story books that children might have for homework.

Secondary Resources

General Secondary Resources

Social Subjects Resources  - A resource containing different social subjects themed topics which may support BGE and Senior Phase pupils with vocabulary development and the study of areas of interest outside the curriculum. This may also be of use to pupils who are able to study Social Subjects through the Medium of Gaelic.

‘Eadar Da Sgeul’ Resource from Storlann  - A collection of short stories that pupils may study in school at both BGE and Certificate level. There are accompanying worksheets available for download.

‘Fileanta’ resource from Storlann  - A collection of resources for GME pupils in the secondary school. Resources cover BGE, National 3/4/5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels. This material is mainly used by classroom teachers however the listening resources for National 3, National 4 and National 5 may be of use to pupils looking for extra listening practice materials.

‘Mealladh’ Short Story Resource from Storlann - This is a collection of engaging new short stories from new writers. They are suitable for reading for pleasure for BGE pupils. The collection of short stories is available for download for free on the website.

Gaelic Resource Database - Resources, suitable for the secondary subject of History, based on older textbooks which may still be available in schools.

Tobar an Dualchais - A selection of videos and audio recordings, most suitable for upper secondary school, with questions to support listening and understanding. This resource also features a transcripts.

This collection has been curated by Storlann for secondary pupils but a wider range of audio recordings is available on the Tobar and Dualchais website.

SQA Past Papers - SQA website in which you can search for past papers from SQA exams for all subjects at N5, Higher and Advanced Higher level.
