Argyll and Bute Council today agreed a grant of up to £100,000 to deliver a home for the area’s only affiliated boxing club and a new venue for community groups.
Dunoon’s long-standing Amateur Boxing Club had secured financial backing from various investors including sportscotland.
The council’s grant means that work can now progress to build a training venue for the club in the grounds of Dunoon Stadium.
The facility will also be available for wider community use.
Councillor Gary Mulvaney, Policy Lead for Strategic Finance and Capital Regeneration, said: “Any investment of council funding must work hard for Argyll and Bute. There is enthusiasm for this project, and strong financial backing. Today’s council investment recognises the money awarded from Sport Scotland and raised locally for this project and will help support young people through sport.”
A report considered by Council sets out potential benefits from the new facility.
These include partnership working between different sports clubs, meeting rooms and fitness classes, outreach work by the Boxing Club to support deprived areas, and attracting competition events to the area.
The council’s grant is subject to suitable tenders being received to build the facility.
The centre is scheduled to open in Spring 2019.
