Single Person Discount Review

Argyll and Bute Council is currently carrying out a review of all residents who currently receive a 25% Single Person Discount (SPD) on their council tax.

SPD is claimed when an adult is the sole adult occupant of the property. Whilst most residents who claim the discount are genuinely eligible, there are a minority who are attempting to deceive the system.

These residents may not have reported a change in their circumstances and are currently receiving the discount when they are no longer entitled to it. The SPD Review is a scheme used to detect those who are claiming a discount that they are no longer eligible for.

As a result of the review, some people may receive a letter requesting more information about their current circumstances. Not only will this help keep the council’s records up to date, it will also enable residents to notify the service if there has been a change in their circumstances.

Please note: If you are currently in receipt of SPD and you receive one of these letters, you must respond. If you do not respond you will have your SPD removed and further investigations may be undertaken.

Argyll and Bute Council is dedicated to protecting the public purse and detecting fraud.  Council Tax misrepresentation is taken very seriously and the team is very pro-active in confirming all entitlements to discounts. We would like to thank our residents for their on-going cooperation throughout this exercise.
