With the UK General Election now confirmed, Thursday 4 July 2024 is a date familiar for many of us. But, if you want to make sure you have your say, there are some other dates you’ll need to bear in mind.
No matter how you want to vote, you’ll have to be registered first. Registering to vote is quick and easy. You can do it online in just a few minutes – but the deadline for this election is Tuesday 18 June at 5pm.
Anyone who wants to vote in person in the UK General Election will need to bring photo ID to the polling station. There are several different types of photo ID that you can use. If you don’t have any photo ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate instead – but make sure you do so before 5pm on Wednesday 26 June. Find out more and apply at the Electoral Commission website (make sure you choose Scotland as your location).
If you’re away on Polling Day, or can’t get to a polling station in person, you still have other choices.
You can apply for a postal vote for this election before 5pm on Wednesday 19 June. Another option is to request a proxy vote, where someone else goes to the polling station to vote on your behalf. The deadline for proxy applications is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.
Find out more about all of these voting choices, register and apply online in plenty of time.
Finally, if you want to know who’s seeking your vote, details of all candidates (also known as the Notice of Poll) has been published on Argyll and Bute Council’s dedicated Elections web page. You’ll also find lots of information there about all aspects of elections, details of polling stations and much more.
