Chuir an Ceann-poileasaidh airson na Gàidhlig aig Comhairle Earra-Ghàidheal is Bhòid, an Comhairliche Robin MacMhuirich, fàilte air co-chomhairleachadh a tha Riaghaltas na Rìoghachd Aonaichte a’ cumail air Cairt Rìoghail a’ BhBC. Sa cho-chomhairleachadh thathar a’ sireadh bheachdan air a’ BhBC agus na bu chòir dha a bhith dèanamh san ùine air thoiseach.

Tha an Comhairliche MacMhuirich ag iarraidh gun cosg am BBC barrachd air BBC Alba, an sianal telebhisein Gàidhlig, feuch am bi iad a’ maoineachadh 10 uairean a thìde de phrògraman matha gach seachdain an àite 4.4 uairean a thìde mar a tha iad an-dràsta.

Thuirt an Comhairliche MacMhuirich, mar fhreagairt don cho-chomhairleachadh: “Tha e na amas do Chomhairle Earra-Ghàidheal is Bhòid a’ Ghàidhlig agus a cultar a ghleidheadh, a bhrosnachadh agus gum bi a’ Ghàidhlig mar phàirt den obair againn.

“Bu mhath leam gun cosgadh am BBC barrachd air prògraman do BhBC Alba. Cha bhiodh an taic nas motha a tha sinn a’ moladh a’ fàgail an t-sianail air an aon stèidh agus a tha sianalan mion-chànain eile leithid sianal na Cuimris, S4C, ach bhiodh e a’ ciallachadh gum b’ urrainn do BhBC Alba seirbheis tòrr nas fheàrr a thoirt don luchd-amhairc aca.

“Cuideachd, nam biodh barrachd phrògraman ùra ann dh’fhaodadh sin cuideachadh le uireasbhaidhean san t-seirbheis, leithid ìre ath-chraolaidh a th’ aig 73%, cion naidheachdan aig an deireadh-sheachdain, beàrnan san taghadh de phrògraman cloinne is òigridh a tha rim faicinn, cion comadaidh, phrògraman dibhearsain agus phrògraman do luchd-ionnsachaidh.”

Argyll and Bute Council’s Policy Lead for Gaelic, Councillor Robin Currie, has welcomed a consultation being undertaken by the UK Government on the BBC’s Royal Charter. The consultation invites comments on the BBC and what it should do in the future.

Councillor Currie has asked for an increase in the BBC’s investments in BBC ALBA, the Gaelic language television channel, from 4.4 hours to 10 hours of quality programming each week.

Responding to the consultation, Councillor Currie said, “Argyll and Bute Council is committed to the preservation, promotion and engagement in the Gaelic language and culture.

“I would like the BBC to increase its investments in BBC ALBA. While that would not bring the channel in line with other minority language channels such as the Welsh language channel, S4C, it would enable the BBC ALBA to offer a significantly better service to its audiences.

“An increase in the number of hours would also address issues such as the 73% repeat rate, the lack of news over the weekend, the gaps in children’s and young people’s programming, and the lack of comedy, entertainment and programming for learners.”
