What is fly-tipping
Fly-tipping is ‘the illegal deposit of any waste onto land, ie waste dumped or tipped on a site with no licence to accept waste’. Fly-tipping affects the aesthetic appeal of an area and causes damage to the environment. Waste can include: general household waste; larger domestic items including fridges and mattresses; garden refuse; and commercial waste such as builders’ rubble, clinical waste and tyres.

Why is fly-tipping a problem?
- Uncontrolled waste disposal can be hazardous to the public who may come into contact with it e.g. chemical wastes, electrical items, syringes.
- Environmental damage can result from illegally dumped waste.
- Fly-tipping looks unsightly which can have a detrimental affect on the appeal of an area or can harm investment into an area.
- Cleaning up fly-tipping costs council tax payers’ money.
- Dumping waste is illegal and therefore anyone caught is committing a serious offence and can be prosecuted.
- It costs £50 to remove fly-tipping. Fines up to £40,000 can be issued.
How do I report a fly-tipping?
If you find any illegally dumped waste please complete our online form or phone 01546 605514. Our timeframe for clearing up waste is five days or one day for hazardous waste. We will also try to identify the person(s) responsible. There is no charge to report fly-tipping.
Exemptions
If an individual had to leave something in an emergency or in mitigating circumstances and informed the council or land owner at first opportunity there is an exception here and we will work positively with that individual to resolve it.
