Second green bin review

From September 2024, we are contacting everyone with a second general waste green bin, at their home, to check they are still needed.

Why are we carrying out this review?

We need to reduce the amount of domestic waste that goes to landfill. A key commitment for the council is promoting reduce, reuse, recycle to help save money, protect services and support climate friendly measures.

Reviewing how many homes have a second green bin, and if they qualify for one, will provide an opportunity to reduce the amount of domestic waste going to landfill, and encourage people to recycle more.

Alongside the review, we will provide advice on how to produce less green bin waste by recycling more and remind customers that they are entitled to an additional blue bin (for co-mingled recyclable materials excluding glass), free of charge should they require it.

Will this be reviewed annually?

Yes, this will help to reduce the amount of domestic waste presented at kerbside, encourage residents to increase recycling and reduce the amount of material which is currently processed for landfill

What is the qualifying criteria for a second General Waste Bin?

We will consider a second green bin if:

  • There are five or more people in a household
  • Someone in a household has a medical condition which means more waste is generated

Will you be collecting my bin if I no longer need it?

If requested by the customer.

How do I arrange collection of my bin?

Customers can arrange collection by replying to the email you have received telling you that you no longer qualify for a second green bin. You can also phone: 01546 605514.

When will you stop emptying my second bin as I no longer qualify for it?

After your next scheduled collection.

How do I mark my bin as mine?

We would recommend you identify all refuse bins with your house name /number using a waterproof pen, paint or stickers.

Why is ‘Children in nappies’ no longer a qualifying criteria?

Councillors took a decision at June’s Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee that children in nappies are no longer a qualifying criteria for the allocation of a second bin.

How do I appeal against the decision that you will no longer empty my second bin?

Please email us at: binreview@argyll-bute.gov.uk with details of why you believe you should still receive an additional green bin.

If some second bins are no longer to be emptied how will you identify who is entitled to a second bin collection?

There will be a record of all approved applications on the route. Therefore, it’s important that all bins are clearly identified by the resident so that our team can recognise which bins are to be collected.

As most bins do not have an obvious name or number on them, how will you know whose bin belongs to what property?

It will be important that bins are clearly identified by the resident so that our team can recognise which bins are to be collected or removed. Mark your bins with your house name /number using a waterproof pen, paint or stickers.

Do I need to provide evidence to qualify for a second bin?

No
