Local Councillors are responsible for making decisions on your behalf about local services.
Elections as prescribed by the Scottish Parliament are held every 5 years to elect councillors to 32 local authorities in Scotland. Each local government area in Scotland is divided into electoral wards and there is a separate election for each electoral ward. The number of Councillors returned in each electoral ward is either three or four.
Argyll and Bute Council area provides 11 electoral wards, each represented by three or four elected Councillors.
Councillors are elected through the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system which allows voters to express a preference for more than one candidate.

Welcome to Your Vote
You can vote in Scottish Local Government (council) elections if you are:
- Aged 16 or over on polling day
- A British, Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
- A Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not require such permission
- A foreign national who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not require such permission
- Not subject to any legal incapacity to vote
- Registered to vote - if your name isn’t on the electoral register, you can’t take part
It only takes five minutes to register and you can do it online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
Once you’re registered to vote, there are a number of different ways to have your say in the council elections.
You can vote in person at a polling station (here is a list of polling places in Argyll and Bute.
If you can’t vote in person on the day, you can vote by post. You can find out how to apply here.
You may wish to appoint someone you trust to vote on your behalf - this is known as a proxy vote. There is more information about this, and application forms, here.
