What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning ‘difference’, which means that the brain can approach things in a different way to other people. Dyslexia can affect the way people communicate, and is different for everyone. It is not just about reading and writing and it has nothing to do with intelligence.
The impact of dyslexia as a barrier to learning varies in degree according to the learning and teaching environment, as there are often associated difficulties such as:
- processing of hear or written language
- phonological awareness
- oral language skills and reading fluency
- short-term and working memory
- sequencing and directionality
- number skills
- organisational ability
Dyslexia is a hereditary, lifelong nurodevelopmental condition that is found in all cultures across a range of abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds.
How can we help
Learners with dyslexia will benefit from early identification, appropriate intervention and targeted effective teaching, enabling them to become successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens.
We offer a service for people with learning difficulties that can provide general day to day support and advice.
We also run adult education classes throughout Argyll and Bute. These can help to improve reading, writing and number skills.
